The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is strictly enforcing a No Walk-In Policy
If the service you need can be completed online, the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) will not process the transaction in a service center.
You need to make an appointment if you need :
- a Commercial Driving License or Permit (CDL/CLP),
- a new registration,
- a Mass ID or
- to convert your out-of-state license.
They call appointments, "reservations." If you do not have a reservation or you do not bring proof that you have a reservation they will turn you away.
Make your reservation online or call 857-368-8000. They will send you a confirmation email or give you a number to show the center when you arrive for your reservation.
All Class D, Class DM, ID cards, and Learner’s Permits that have expired or are expiring between March 1, 2020 and April 30, 2020, have a 60-day extension applied to the current expiration date. See the Registry of Motor Vehicles website.
The federal government has postponed the REAL ID deadline to October 2021. So the RMV is not issuing new REAL IDs right now.
See the Registry of Motor Vehicles COVID-19 webpages. They cover:
- Driver's Licenses, Mass IDs, and Learner's Permits
